1. Anchoring in Soft Sediments

In mud or sand-bottom areas, we have successfully used sand anchors as a mounting structure for OWHLs. Two or more sand anchors and stainless steel worm-drive band clamps can provide a rigid attachment (Figure 36). Sand anchors, also known as ground anchors or earth augers, are available from various online retailers. Our anchors are constructed from 1/2” steel, with a 3-inch wide helix forming the auger that screws into the sediment. Stainless steel band clamps can be purchased in a wide variety of lengths to accommodate housings or protective pipes of different diameters. Be sure to source worm drive band clamps that use a stainless steel screw, since many band clamps advertised as stainless steel often contain a non-stainless steel worm drive screw.
